Working for a living

by on Jul.26, 2010, under Rant

It is my personal opinion that everyone, at some point in their life, should work a low paying job, preferably in the service industry.

During the summer in college I spent time working at a grocery store and I’ve also managed at a convenience store. There’s nothing wrong with either of these jobs. The pay is not the best but it’s honest work. Many people frequently refer to this type of employment as “shit jobs”. I believe that this is a very true statement, not because of the work but because of the way that people treat you.

More than at any other type of job that I have had, I have found that people will be rude and condescending towards you for no particular reason. Apparently, they are good enough to shop there but you aren’t good enough to work there.

These are products and services that people wish to have but, oddly enough, providing them apparently makes you a worthless person.

So remember, if you aren’t a decent enough person to be kind to people who are just doing their jobs, stay home, cook your own food and make your own stuff.

Christmas? In July?

Holy hell!

WTF??

No, seriously, this has gone to far, setting up for Christmas over five and a half months early. We are rapidly moving to the point where we’ll be seeing Christmas decorations all year round. Is this the world that we want our children to grow up in? A world where the Jingle Bell Rock is as inescapable as death and taxes?

I say no!

Delusions

Now I do read Boing Boing, they have some interesting stuff from time to time. One thing, though, that I dislike is that the site’s founder, Cory Doctorow, seems to be batshit insane. He regularly makes position statements and then backs them up with evidence that either makes no sense or contradicts him.

Case in point. Apparently some lady stops to lecture kids on the benefit of selling their product instead of giving it away. Is she a douchebag if this actually happened, sure, they’re kids. Then Doctorow goes off on some weird tangent about companies taking stuff and then selling it. As evidence he says:

Sounds about right — companies take over our public aquifers and sell us the water they pump out of them; telcos get our rights of way for their infrastructure, then insist that they be able to tier their pricing without regard to the public interest.

A little bizarre. Most companies have to pay leases to the government to tap those aquifers. Even if they don’t, he’s free to drill his own well and even give it away if he wants, see how much money it’ll cost him to drill the hole, lay the pipes, pump the water and then maintain the whole damn system.

Then he complains about the phone company laying wires on his property. Once again, apparently this infrastructure is magically free in his world and apparently he’s hoping the phone fairy will come along and connect his calls.

It’s called TINSTAAFL (There Is No Such Thing As A Free Lunch), Cory. I learned it in high school econ.

Art hippie douchebag…

Iain Burke is just that. It takes a certain amount of narcissism to take the time to accuse someone of “ripping off your work” when all you did is take the Sherwin Williams logo and add color in the first place. You sir, are a fucking twit. You are one of the people that is wrong with this country. If you want to claim originality of the piece, at least have the decency to re-draw a similar picture of Sherwin Williams “cover the earth” logo and call it yours. Don’t just photoshop out the name and call it yours. The BP version that is all over the net was posted for humor, not orginality. This is unlike your fraudulent attempt at “art”. Make the world a better place. You want alternative fuel sources. Kill yourself and burn the body. Even better, two birds with one stone. Just throw yourself in a fire you worthless bitch.

Automotive Engineers Everywhere…

…I have the opportunity of changing the fuel pump on my car. Upon examination of the situation, I have concluded that this is another design that you all need to be punched in the dick for.

For those that do not know, cars that have been manufactured in at least the last 20 years have an electric fuel pump. This means it can be put anywhere that you can run wires to. For sheer awesomeness, the far majority of these are mounted inside your fuel tank. Why? Because they utilize the fuel to keep them cool. So then why is it mounted on the fucking top of the tank and not the bottom where it’s easy to reach? What? there is a greater chance it will leak? Better put it on top then. Good thing since there is no space and it’s right against the floor pan that we put an access panel to get to it. What? There is no fucking access panel? What am I supposed to do now? Oh, just remove the entire fucking fuel tank. That shouldn’t be too bad…Well that’s odd, there seems to be a lot of other shit in the way. What’s that? I have to cut out the welded exhaust, remove the panard bar, sway bar, torque bars and then the whole fucking rear axle so that I can now reach the fuel tank to remove that bastard too? So you’re saying you didn’t put a little door in my trunk to reach it from the top…
PUNCHED. IN. THE. DICK.
