Under a Gibbous Moon

What the hell…?

Currently, the United States is still in the throes of the worst recession is decades. We are currently involved in not one but two wars that have dragged on for the better part of this decade. Congress is considering a sweeping health reform bill that, no matter what they outcome, will have far reaching consequences.

With all this to consider, for the last two days, almost every CNN.com update that I have received had been about Tiger Woods. Its always good to see that we have our priorities straight. What really matters to this nation is how bad his car accident was and who he may or may not be sleeping with.

Those are the truly important issues, unlike, say, peace in the Middle East.

This is hardly a new phenomenon. The last one was the “Balloon Boy” bullshit. Then there’s the ongoing “We have eight kids so everyone look at us”.

This type of story isn’t news. The Weekly World News would have been embarrassed to cover some of these stories. At least they had the dignity to bring us the trials and tribulations of Bat Boy.

I have heard some blame the “24 hour news cycle”. Being on the air all the time means they have to fill it with something. This is true but that is a cop out since they still have the choice as to what to fill that time with. Having the anchor read from the dictionary would at least be educational.

It seems that so much of the news anymore is far less “news” and just paparazzi type looks into people’s lives. The lives of people who are not news worthy for any reason except for the fact that they are rich (Tiger Woods), bizarre (Balloon Boy) or both (Michael Jackson).

Finally, I must lay at least some of the blame upon those who actually read this shit. For without them, these types of stories would not be profitable enough to air. So for all those who read the articles and talk about it around the water cooler, shame on you.
