GEICO, evil or stupid?

by on Nov.29, 2009, under Rant

It is always interesting when a company does something that means that they don’t care about their customers or that they are profoundly stupid.  No middle ground, no excuses, its either they are one or the other.

It has been 10 days since my car accident. Not having heard anything from GEICO since I reported the accident. I went to the web site to check up on its status. While poking around I found out that my rental vehicle (I have rental vehicle coverage) was only authorized for 5 days (starting on the 25th).

This rather arbitrary time limit was not mentioned when I spoke to the claims adjuster nor was it mentioned when I picked up the rental car. The only way I found out about it was that I happened to look under the rental tab online.

Obviously, since nothing has yet been done about my vehicle, I still need the rental car. My rental coverage will cover about a months rental, so that is not the problem.

So, I determined to fix the problem. I called GEICO and explained the problem. They told me that the only person who could authorize additional rental days did not work weekends, despite the fact that they chose to end the authorized rental period on a Sunday.

So in short, they did not bother tell me about the time limit. When I found out about the time limit, they said that there was no one who was available to fix it until after their imposed deadline.

Evil or stupid? You decide.
